Yetty Ogunnubi wins PRIDE OF AFRICA Award at the PFW Africa Awards 2018

I have always believed in my work speaking for me. My idea of work is that you do all you need to do under the radar and then the work itself would speak and others would commend.

So on Sunday, which was a special day anyway because it was also my birthday. I got the biggest surprise of my life!!! It was an award, a special one at that and one that I greatly appreciate. It just says in a little word-appreciation. There’s nothing like being appreciated for one’s contributions and efforts.

Thank you to Plussize Fashion Week Africa Organizers @pfwafrica And I know that this is just one of very many to come. We ain’t gonna rest on our oars and we and the brands that we have in the family, are going to the next level together!!! The award is dedicated to all the brands we have worked for and most especially to…… *this award is dedicated to all the brands we have worked for and most especially to YD Agency Team @ydagency Let’s take it to the next level…

ABOUT US

African culture is one that has historically celebrated the healthy looking plus-sized woman. She is the everyday woman, in the office, the shop, the marketplace, and on the streets. Contemporary fashion trends in the global West have exhibited an exponential tendency to alienate the plus-sized woman, to the point of stigmatizing her body size. The cross-cultural exchange between these two locales has led to a significant rise of “size zero” models on the African runway. This fact tends to question the integrity of conventional African Fashion runways, with ‘zero’ sized models walking for audiences, 85% of whom are plus sized! This has created a noticeable divide between the audience and the fashion show.

To Bridge this gap, and put the real needs of the average African woman on the runway, the Plussize Fashion Week™ was born, thus bringing an African Fashion Feel to an African Audience. The Plussize Fashion Week™ is poised to celebrate the African Woman’s Body, whilst not excluding models and apparels of a variety of shapes and sizes.

Opening in Lagos for the second edition, this is the only fashion runway show ever dedicated to Plus size designers, models and apparels. In support of Nigerian Tourism and business hub opportunities, the event is open to a host of local, international and diaspora designers and models who are willing to be part of the event. Last year we also extended our links to welcome UK based and US-based designers for this event, which proved an enriching experience of cultural diversity, reflective of our ever globalising world.
Plussize Fashion Week (PFWAfrica®) Founder and Executive Producer; Temi Aboderin-Alao is the Creative Director of JPKouture By Hadassah which is the high end plus size fashion brand, C.E.O of JPKingdom a ready to wear one stop shop for plus size women and Golden Curvy agency, one of the first and leading plus-size modelling agency in Nigeria, which was found in 2011. Temi Aboderin-Alao is also part of the Punch Newspaper Dynasty, as one of the daughters of the founder the Late Chief James Olubunmi Aboderin.

Curve the plus size is a Nigerian brand birthed to appreciate and celebrate the curvy woman. Luvita Creations was founded by Lovelyn Ita in 2016. NIIFFE was started in 2010 solely as a bespoke brand catering mainly for weddings and special events (majorly red carpets), they then launched in their RTW arm in 2012 with the sole aim of providing the opportunity for people to be adequately represented through their fashion sense and style. It has always been their belief that clothes should be made to fit our bodies and not the other way round and as a result, their designs are magnificent, mysterious, fresh, radiant, elegant with and intensive that you will find desirable.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Opening in Lagos for the first time is the only fashion runway show ever dedicated to Plus Size Models and Apparels. In the light of realities, this will be the first TRULY AFRICAN fashion runway show! African culture celebrates the healthy looking plus sized woman. She is the everyday woman in the African Office, Shop, Marketplace and on the streets.

Western Fashion Trends has tended to alienate the plus sized African woman, almost to the point of stigmatising her body size. This fact has tended to question the integrity of conventional African Fashion runways with ‘zero’ sized models strutting the runways being viewed by audiences, 85% of whom are plus sized! This tended to create a divide, between the audience and the fashion show.

To Bridge this gap and put the real needs of the average African woman on the runway, the  Plussize Fashion Week is finally born, thus bringing an African Fashion Feel to an African Audience.

The Plussize Fashion Week is poised to celebrate the African Woman’s Body, while not excluding zero sized and other sized models and apparels as well. It also not a female exclusive fashion show, male apparels and models are also to be showcased.

Plussize Fashion Week is endorsed by FADAN
